Are you dreaming of the Xbox 720? Or are you waiting patiently for the next round of consoles to drive down the price of that shiny new Xbox 360 you’ve been eyeing for quite some time. For godsakes don’t let the price hold you back . Because regardless of which of these categories you fall into (if either), you shouldn’t see either anytime soon.
In a recent electronics industry newsletter, Wedbush Morgan analyst and prominent video game industry tealeaf reader Michael Pachter predicted that the next wave of consoles will not reach store shelves until atleast 2013….if ever! This would mean atleast 7 years between iterations of the big three console makers’ systems, surpassing the current console generation lifespan of 5 years by atleast 2 years, if not more.
We do not expect the ‘next’ generation to begin before 2013, if ever,” Pachter said. ” We remain convinced that the publishers will resist the introduction of any video game hardware that requires a refresh of software, as the publishers have as yet to capitalise on the immense investments made in being competetive in the current cycle.
It would appear that not enough people are buying the consoles that are already out there so video game companies are finding it hard to justify the upfront costs that would be incurred by a new round of consoles. Yet dwinding sales are always cited as the impetus for a new lineup of consoles. How confusing is that? Oh, well. Go figure.

Glad you enjoyed the article. If you ask me, it’s good news given this recession mess we seem to be stuck in. Actually, it’s great news for many reasons. Doesn’t it seem that a little bit more of the current generation of consoles’ potential is being unlocked with each “season” of game releases. Especially in the case of the Xbox 360.
if ever?
now thats just stupid, what if developers want to put more into their games?
what if they want to do a game where the ps3 or 360 does not have enough horses to handle?
PC hardware is going to keep evolving and consoles are going to stop?
i dont see how someone could possibly think that.
if their implying motion controllers will take over, than 1 horses will still be needed.
and 2 motion controls will never replace the controller.
if they ever do, im willing to bet my left nut they wont, im going back to proper gaming.
back to the good oll PC.
I absolutely agree. To say “if ever” is totally nonsensical. I didn’t make the prediction myself. I’m just reporting it. I do however believe that it may be a somewhat longer generation cycle for a number of reasons. One of the biggest being that they have just now begun, IMO, to figure out how to “milk” the current generation for all that it’s worth. In other words, they are just now beginning to somewhat push the limits of what this generation is capable of. I truly believe that before this generation comes to an end we will see some really great things. I am fixing to be posting some screenshots in my next post that are more than impressive. Check it
out!
