Xbox 720: No Time Soon

Are you dreaming of the Xbox 720? Or are you waiting patiently for the next round of consoles to drive down the price of that shiny new Xbox 360 you’ve been eyeing for quite some time. For godsakes don’t let the price hold you back . Because regardless of which of these categories you fall into (if either), you  shouldn’t see either anytime soon.

In a recent electronics industry newsletter, Wedbush Morgan analyst and prominent video game industry tealeaf reader Michael Pachter predicted that the next wave of consoles will not reach store shelves until atleast 2013….if ever! This would mean atleast 7 years between iterations of the big three console makers’ systems, surpassing the current console generation lifespan of 5 years by atleast 2 years, if not more.

We do not expect the ‘next’ generation to begin before 2013, if ever,” Pachter said. ” We remain convinced that the publishers will resist the introduction of any video game hardware that requires a refresh of software, as the publishers have as yet to capitalise on the immense investments made in being competetive in the current cycle.

It would appear that not enough people are buying the consoles that are already out there so video game companies are finding it hard to justify the upfront costs that would be incurred by a new round of consoles. Yet dwinding sales are always cited as the impetus for a new lineup of consoles. How confusing is that? Oh, well. Go figure.
