The Metal Gear and Metal Gear solid series have enjoyed a reputation of being some of the greatest, most story-driven games in video game history. Hideo Kojima brought us all his dream of making something more than games, more so playable action movies. Many gamers are all too aware of the saga of Big Boss, the world’s greatest soldier, and his clones created by the Les Enfants Terrible Project. In the Metal Gear games, we played as Big Boss, creating Outer Haven, and later as Solid Snake tasked with killing Big Boss at Zanzibar Island. When we found out that Big Boss was Solid Snake’s father, we freaked.

In the first Metal Gear Solid game, we went to Alaska to rescue the DARPA chief, and stop terrorists from launching a nuke with a walking battle tank called Metal Gear REX. We met Meryl, the Colonel’s niece (actually his daughter), who we thought would bring happiness to our embattled Snake. We defeated FOXHOUND, and narrowly escaped being killed by the FOXDIE virus. Liquid Snake told us that he was our brother of sorts, and that we were clones of Big Boss, one with his dominant genes, and one with his recessive genes. The Les Enfants Terrible, or ‘The Terrible Children,’ Project had created these clones to serve in the same manner Big Boss had, with a bit more control.

In Metal Gear Solid 2, We played as Raiden, an ex-child soldier that was a bit whiny for our tastes. We were sent to investigate another terrorist group, this one supposedly led by Solid Snake. We instead found a new FOXHOUND, and Solidus Snake, the final clone with the exact same genetic makeup of Big Boss. As Raiden, with some help from the real Solid Snake, we stopped these new terrorists and their new Metal Gear, RAY. We learned of The PATRIOTS, a group that has been controlling wars and governments for centuries.

In Metal Gear Solid 3, we went back in time to play as Naked Snake in a tale of James Bond style love and deception. We met some of the faces we knew from previous games, and saw what made them act the way they did. Naked Snake eventually had to stop the first Metal Gear, and his Mentor, The Boss. Once his Mission was complete, he became the soldier we all had heard of, by the new name of Big Boss.

In Metal Gear Solid 4, Most of our remaining questions were answered, along with those we hadn’t known enough to ask. The World had become seemingly engulfed in total war, with soldiers being bought and sold. An aging Solid Snake, now Old Snake had one final mission. The War economy was suddenly the most important thing in our minds, and this was controlled by the PATRIOTS. We met and defeated the Beauty and the Beast Corps, shell-shocked soldiers who just can’t stop fighting. Raiden came back, having left everything behind shortly after the events of Metal Gear Solid 2, with a mostly cyborg body; now he was a true killing machine. The End of Metal Gear Solid 4 shocked us all with the return and (final?) death of Big Boss, who finally explained just who the PATRIOTS really were.

Hideo Kojima had announced that the Metal Gear Solid Series was over, but blew us all away again by appearing at E3. He explained that not only was Metal Gear Solid not dead, but that the newest game would be the first to be on Xbox 360. We watched the Metal Gear Solid: Rising trailer which displayed Raiden with one eye covered by a cloth, the other a different color than normal. He was wearing new armor, and the “Tactical Espionage Action’ Tagline we came to know and love was replaced with ‘Lightning Bolt Action.’ Even in some of the publicity photos for the game, it shows Raiden atop what looks to be Crying Wolf from the Beauty and the Beast Corps. What can all this possibly mean? Are we to expect a game set chronologically between Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4? Will this explain how Raiden got his armor, why he really left his woman and child? Perhaps how the world got so overcome by war? The Biggest question we have is: Will Solid Snake have an appearance In it? Kojima Certainly knows how to make us get excited about a game. There is little to no real information on the game other than the cryptic teaser trailer, and the fact that Kojima is producing, but not leading the direction of this game. He does promise that it involves the classic sneaking around, but is a “totally new Metal Gear Solid Experience.” Unfortunately, all we can do is wait, and we all will. Some thing tells me that we will keep guessing about this game until we put down the controller after finishing it.
